This assignment was to challenge us to think beyond 2-D works. How could we make our pieces come off the wall? I was very inspired by Chinese shadow puppets. These traditional puppets were made of cut paper and attached to slim bamboo rods. Each puppet had movable joints at the arms and legs for the puppeteer tell the story. I chose to create six animals from cut paper and configure them into a hollow hexagon that represents a lantern in shape. The frame holding the "lantern" is made of cardboard. Each of the six animals represents me and my family; these animals also are iconic symbols in Chinese culture. I really like how my piece came out. The only thing I would do differently if I had more time would be to make the animals out of translucent paper instead of opaque paper. Then I could put a light source in the middle and have the animals be a silhouette.
