Conceptual Art A good portion of my past work—I feel—falls under Formalism. They are pretty things that are pleasing to look at, but they do not give much beyond that. I mentioned at the beginning of the year that I thought my past works lacked depth because they did not have a well thought out background; they were just well rendered floating images. Now I think my past work lacks meaning because I made these things without a clear message in mind. Not saying that I am not proud of my past work, however moving forward in my art education I want my work to be compelling visually and thought provoking. As I stated in my Social Commentary post I want my work to encourage others. My understanding of Conceptual Art is artwork that amplifies the artist’s ideas to a higher level than the work itself. They use classical or iconic images to create a message or statement. This is what I hope to achieve more of in this course and in my art education as a whole. I feel that I was right on the cusp of this with my Pick One of Four piece.
